i was talking to a longtime faithful japanese jw who said that recently there are many young witnesses going to university.

" what about the recent dc and circuit assembly talks as well as the watchtowers, very firmly discouraging college.

the reply was " yes they are hearing but not doing "

Japanese culture worships education. So maybe JW'ism merely takes a back seat to the God of Education in Japan.

Why is society so obsessed with doctors and pills?

i went to the doctor last fall to have my cholesterol tested and it was high.

rather then telling me to diet, exercise and other natural advice.

i was handed a prescription for something to lower my cholesterol, and sent on my way.

I have a few pharma sales reps that I call friends. Both medical practices and drug companies use the AMA and law structure to guide their relationship. For example:

Gifts accepted by physicians should primarily entail a benefit to patients and should not be of substantial value (under $100).
Individual gifts to physicians of minimal value are permissible as long as the gifts are related to the physician's work (e.g. pens and notepads).
Pharmaceutical subsidies to underwrite the cost of attending meetings or professional conferences may be acceptable if paid to the conference sponsor who uses the funds to reduce registration fees.
Physicians should not accept payment for the costs of travel, lodging, or other expenses for merely attending conferences. Hospitality and entertainment at meetings should not be accepted outside of modest meals or social events held as part of a conference meeting.
Faculty at conferences and consultants may accept reasonable reimbursement for their expenses if they provide genuine services commensurate with the payment.
Pharmaceutical companies may provide funds for student/trainees to attend selected educational conferences as long as the selection of those attendees is made by the educational institution.
No gifts should be accepted if there are strings attached.
The receipt of gifts cannot be related in any way to physician prescribing practices.
Educational conference grants are acceptable only if the conference organizers have full responsibility and control over the faculty, content and materials.

Are there "bad apples" breaking the law, I'm sure. Just be careful that you don't paint with a broad brush based on a few bad seeds.

How do you feel about people on government assistence?

for a long time, before working with people in this situation, i would have answered this question with .... "i feel for them and i know how degrading it must be, to come to this point in their life to have to depend on the government to sustain them" .

... once i got up close and personal with these people, i have learned that my answer only applies to a small group of those on government assistance.

well from my experience, those on government assistance are more often about taking advantage of the system, then they are about actually being in need of help.

I saw on another board where someone posted an article from USA Today. You remember the woman in France that got a face transplant a month or so ago? Turns out she has picked up smoking again, even though this makes rejection of the tissue and healing VERY VERY hard. Who will she blame when the face graft doesn't "take"? Most people want a miracle cure so they don't have to make any tough choices.

we are among the 5th generation of witnesses, my great grand mother went to rutherfords funeral, and being a witness has always been central in their lives.

i went to bethel like my brother, and uncles before me and sat at the same sewing machine that my grandfather had sat at when he was there.

Your wife isn't very "rational"? I think her comment about worshipping Ra was very rational. 80%+worship the same as their parents....just like you have done. Relgion ends up being almost "genetic". You believe what you have been taught to be true. For her to see this, is a pretty cool thing IMHO.

actually, if she were getting too close to a boy, i probably wouldn't know how to handle it either....lol.

Slippers / shoes at book studies

hi everyone!

was there ever an issue as to whether you were / weren't allowed to wear shoes at a group book study in someones house , so everyone had to dump their shoes at the door?.

Some of you need to log off JWD, and check yourself into an OCD clinic.

It reminds me of the lady I met that wanted to develop a "shield" for birthday cakes for kids. She felt that the birthday boy / girl blowing out the candles on the cake spread germs. She wanted to make a removable plastic shield so the child could blow out the candles and then have it removed after the "blowout". Is this what the world has come to? The little rat bags wrestling around with snotty nose....like that won't spread virus, let's worry about a birthday cake shield.

Of course all these anti-bacterial soaps and whatnot that are on the market. They will only help to breed super germs. I'm not sure when wiping down the kitchen counters went from soap and water, or 409, to Bleach Spray 4500 kills germs dead became necessary.
